Listening & Questioning Skills

Training courses for foster carers

How to listen well and how to word our questions are two of the basic communication skills. This workshop is aimed at foster carers who want to master the basics of good listening and questioning.

It begins with looking at the importance of the core conditions (acceptance, genuineness and empathy) of effective communication; and the development of rapport.

The merits of asking ‘open’ questions, rather than ‘closed’ questions are considered in detail.  Also, the six micro skills of active listening are both described and practised within the workshop.

Participants are introduced to solution focused questions which are more likely to produce progress and results within working relationships.

Strategies are provided for dealing with barriers, blocks and communication spoilers:  “Dunno”; “If only…”; and, “Yes, but…” are some examples of these.

This one-day course meets the requirements of the Training, Support & Development Standards for foster care :  1.a, 1.b, 1.2 , 1.3, 2.1, 2.3, 3.4, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1,5.2, 5.4, 5.5, 6.2, 7.3, 7.4
